New Medicare Card Project

New Medicare cards are currently being issued with the new Medicare Beneficiary Identification (MBI) numbers.

Effective with the October 2018 Quarterly Release, the Medicare Beneficiary ID qualifier returned on the X12 835 ERA is being changed from “HN” to “MI” (2100 Loop, NM1 Patient Name Segment, NM108 element).  This will apply to all ERA files generated by the DME MACs as of the implementation of the October 2018 release – regardless of whether the actual Medicare Beneficiary ID submitted on the claim was a HICN or an MBI.  For more information regarding this change, please refer to the MLN article:  https://www.cms.gov/Outreach-and-Education/Medicare-Learning-Network-MLN/MLNMattersArticles/downloads/MM10565.pdfExternal PDF file.

Also effective with the October 2018 Quarterly Release, Medicare will begin the “Sharing Period”.  Claims submitted with a beneficiary's HICN will have the beneficiary’s MBI returned on the X12 835 ERA in the 2100 Loop (NM1 segment for Corrected Patient/Insured Name, element NM109 Corrected Insured ID).
